The Concert
Sir Antonio Pappano is joined by one of Britain’s greatest tenors for some of the most romantic songs ever written: Beethoven, Liszt and Britten at their most passionate.
The Music
Beethoven wrote only one song cycle, but what a statement it is. The six songs of An die ferne Geliebte (‘To the distant beloved’) were composed in 1816. Yearning and wistful, they are also strikingly direct expressions of love: for nature, beauty and for the ‘distant beloved’.
Britten’s Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo are ardent songs full of both fire and grace, dedicated to Britten’s partner and lifelong muse, Peter Pears.
Between these two deeply personal statements come two songs by Liszt: the tender Du bist wie eine Blume and the hushed, inward-looking Wandrers Nachtlied, miniatures of poetic intensity and rapt stillness.
The Performers
Sir Antonio Pappano, Chief Conductor of the LSO, presents a special chamber concert alongside Allan Clayton, who has been praised for the ‘declamatory power and lyrical intimacy’ of his singing of Britten’s Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo.
Recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
